What equipment do I need to start SOT kayaking?....
Our advice.....
Buy equipment that is CE marked. If it does not meet European quality standards, do not use it, especially on the sea.
Buy reputable brands. These are a great investment. Pay a bit more and you'll get a lot more value in the long run.
Absolute minimum essentials
- SOT kayak (Sit On Top)
- Paddle
- Paddle leash
- PFD (Personal Flotation Device, aka Buoyancy Aid)
- Wetsuit
- Booties
- Dry pouch for mobile phone
Optional but strongly advised
- Whistle
- Dry bags
- Cag
- Helmet
- Thermal baselayer
- Kayak seat
- Paddle float
Optional but strongly suggested (especially for SOT kayaking in Irish spring and autumn)
- PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)
- Thigh straps
- Spare paddle (2-piece or 4-piece)
- Drysuit
- Pogies
- Neoprene beanie
