Intro to Sit-On-Top (SOT) kayaking

If you have decided to make the most of our wonderful Irish coastline on your staycation this year, and have bought a SOT, or are considering using one this summer, this 1-day course will teach you important fundamentals and safety knowledge and skills for SOT kayaking on the sea.

The majority of what we teach on the SOT course is around trip planning, weather conditions, equipment set up, safety.   SOT's are wonderfully easy to paddle, so the SOT paddling skills only make up a small part of this training day.   Most of what we teach is what equipment to use, how to use it, and most importantly, where and when to use it, and how to get back in the kayak if you take a swim.

We can provide equipment or you can bring your own. Cost is €100pp.

Intro To Sea Kayaking

Whether you are an absolute beginner who has never sat in a sea kayak before, or you have some kayaking experience, and want to rapidly progress to intermediate sea kayaker level, this is the course for you. This course is also good for anybody who wants a taster of sea kayaking to see if it's a sport they would like to take up, and provides advice on what equipment to get. The aim of the course is you will be able to kayak safely and competently with a group of kayakers being led in good weather and sea conditions, and you are able to assist in basic rescues. This will open the door for you to join guided sea kayak trips over the summer and the coming autumn, winter and spring on good weather days.  We teach the paddling skills required for CI SK L2 certification.

This is a 2-day course over a Saturday and Sunday. All equipment is provided. Cost is €200pp.

Safe sea-trip planning

This is classroom training, so no equipment is required. We stay nice and warm and dry for this one :-)
This is for beginner Level 1 to intermediate/advanced Level 3 sea-kayakers, ocean racing surfskis, and Sit-On-Top (SOT) kayakers who want to paddle on the sea. We teach how to pick and plan safe and enjoyable kayaking on the sea in Ireland. A "sea-trip" can be 10 minutes and 50 metres, or 10 hours and 60 kms.
In part 1 we teach weather and sea conditions; where to get forecast info, what it means, how to interpret it, and how to apply it to planning a paddle on the sea. In part 2 we look at other factors that need to be considered and planned. We teach the knowledge required for CI SK L2 certification.
This is a 1-day course, or we split it across 2-evenings. Cost is €60pp.

Level 3 training days and evenings

These are for people who already have foundation skills and experience in sea kayaking and want to keep progressing knowledge, skills and confidence. This is ideal for those who have completed our Intro To Sea Kayaking course, or have some previous informal sea kayaking experience, and for people who are doing final preparation for an L3 certification assessment. We focus first on ensuring fundamental sea kayaking skills and knowledge are solid and then build on top of those, advise on what skills you should work on next and what equipment to buy. These training days (weekend) and evenings (mid-week in summer) take the form of a guided sea kayak trip with a strong focus on learning. The training content is flexible as we adjust to the paddler's and group's needs and wants, and the weather and sea conditions.  Due to the rugged and exposed nature of the Copper Coast we specialise in training and coaching sea kayakers on the knowledge and skills to handle and enjoy rough water conditions.

All equipment is provided, or you can bring your own. Cost is €100pp for day-trip training (€80pp if you use your own equipment), and €50pp for evening-trip training sessions.

Rescues and Rolling sessions

These sessions are to teach and refresh safety skills in assisted rescues, self-rescues and rolling.  We don't do much distance because the focus is on wet work.
